Helambu trekking

Helambu trekking located some 75 km northeast of the Kathmandu that starts from the Sundarijal or the Malemchi Bazaar. Tamang and Sherpa people call Yolmo live in here with farming and animal husbandry. The past Hidden Valley with the potato (He) and radish (labu) became its name. They have apple garden. Hiking to a pleasant Malemchi Khola valley with Tamang village, Buddhist shrines and cave are interesting. There are practices of the Tibetan Buddhism.

Helambu trekking offers 7 days medium trip below the 3600 m altitude nearby Kathmandu city. Trekkers can approach after the Gosaikund and Ganjala pass with several ascends and descends. Normally Sundarijal is the hiking starting point situated 15 km northeast of the Kathmandu valley. Langtang and Helambu trip together can be 15 days. Tea house trip is available in this area. The people rely on agriculture as a profession. This trip is useful to explore a village and civilization of the ethnic group in Nepal.

Helambu trekking is interesting to visit some monasteries, chortens with prayer flags, Mani walls with the tribes such as Sherpa and Tamang with their rich culture. The unique dresses, tradition, food habits and local festivals are interesting. Locals drink butter tea. The people are different from a Sherpa of the Khumbu. Spring will be coloured by the rhododendron flower. The Malemchigaon, Tarke Gyang, Shermathang, Kutumsang and Talamarang village are popular there. Day 03: Kathmandu (1350 m) to Chisopani (2200 m) – 4/5 hours

Day 04: Chisopani to Kutumsang (2470 m) – 6/7 hours

Day 05: Kutumsang to Tharepati (3640 m) – 5/6 hours

Day 06: Tharepati to Tarke Ghyang (2600 m) – 6/7 hours

Day 07: Tarke Ghyang to Shermathang (2620 m) – 4/5 hours

Day 08: Shermathang to Melamchi Bazaar (830 m) – 4/5 hours

Day 09: Malemchi Bazaar to Kathmandu (1350 m) – 4/5 hours

Day 10: Departure to Tribhuban International Airport

Day 01 : Arrival in Kathmandu Airport 1337 m
When flight arrives at Tribhuvan International Airport, take 6 km drive with our guide, takes 25 minutes to reach hotel. Check in hotel and guide will brief the programs. Stay overnight at hotel with breakfast in Kathmandu.

Day 02: Full day sightseeing in Kathmandu – 6 hours
Professional Tour Guide comes at 9 AM with a car to the hotel door. Ride the car, guide explains about Nepal. The four UNESCO world heritage sites include Swayambhunath (1st century) is popular for the Buddhist Stupa, activity of the Assamese monkey and the panoramic view of Kathmandu Valley and the Himalaya. Kathmandu Durbar Square (12th to 18th century) is popular for royal palace squares, museum, Kasthamandap, the Living Goddess Kumari, Freak Street, wood carving and temple architecture. Pashupatinath (5th century) is famous for the cremation ghat, Pashupatinath Temple, the shrines with Shiva Lingam and Yoni, the Hindu holy men (Sadhus) and an activity of the Assamese monkey and deer in the sub-tropical forest. Boudhanath (5th century) is famous for the second largest Stupa in the world, Tibetan refugee settlement, painting school, huge prayer wheel, prayer flag and monastery with the monk and lama.

Day 03: Kathmandu (1350 m) to Chisopani (2200 m) – 4/5 hours
Take a 45-minute car ride with paved road to Sundarijal (1390 m) that is located 15 km northeast corner of Kathmandu valley. There are hydropower and drinking water project that supplies to Kathmadu. Walk through the Shivapuri National park with a check post and picnic spot. Cross the dam and climb through a Tamang village of the Mulkharka (1895 m) with teashop and Kathmandu view. Walk continues though a rhododendron, oak and pine forest to Borlang Bhanjyang (2440 m) with Ganesh Himal and Langtang views. Descend to Chisopani (cold water) with some tea houses in 45 minutes. Stay overnight at a lodge in Chisopani.

Day 04: Chisopani to Kutumsang (2470 m) – 6/7 hours
Descend to Pati Bhanjyang (1770 m) that is Brahmin and Chhetri village with terraced field, check post, lodge and shop. Climb steeply up to the Chipling (2170 m) and the Jhogin Danda (2470 m) with Mountain Views. Descend to the Thodang Betini (2100 m) through a forest to the Gul Bhanjyang (2130 m), a Tamang village with tea shop. Climb up to a pass (2620 m), descend to the Kutumsang, a Tamang village with lodge, and check post. Stay overnight in Kutumsant.

Day 05: Kutumsang to Tharepati (3640 m) – 5/6 hours
Climb uphill thorugh an oak, fir and rhododendron forest, chortens along the way to the Panghu Danda ridge (3230 m) and the Magen Goth (3285 m) with lodge and army post. Climb uphill continues passing though a stream, jungle to reach the Tharepati with some lodges and views of Dorjelakpa, Gaurishanker, Jugal and Number Himalaya. The Thai Airbus crashed in 1992 in the west nearby the Gosaikunda Pass. Stay overnight in Tharepati.

Day 06: Tharepati to Tarke Ghyang (2600 m) – 6/7 hours
Take an east path and descend steeply through juniper, rhododendron and birch forest to reach a cairn (2980 m). Turn left; descend passing a stream and a suspension bridge to reach the Malemchigaon (2530 m). This is an upper Helambu village with the Sherpa people. Here are lodges, gompas, prayer flags and Mani walls. Descend and cross a bridge over the Melamchi Khola (1890 m) and ascend to the Tarke Gyang, a large village with a Ningma-Pa Buddhism . Here are some lodges and gompas. You can glimpse the Ganja La pass north of the valley. Stay overnight here.

Day 07: Tarke Ghyang to Shermathang (2620 m) – 4/5 hours
Walk along an electricity supply line, oak forest to reach the Gangal village with lodges. Walk continues through a ridge passing with several streams, waterfalls to the Shermathang village. Here is an ancient gompa, several lodges and national park check post with the Jugal Mountain view. This is a Sherpa village with their rich culture and tradition.

Day 08: Shermathang to Melamchi Bazaar (830 m) – 4/5 hours
Today you are going to descends 1800 m to the Melamchi Bazaar. Walk passing through the large gompa at the southern end of the Kakani village (1900 m) with tea shops. Descend steeply through a small village to reach the large Tamang village Dubhanchaur (1500 m) with thatched roof houses. Climb downhill, crossing couple of suspension bridges over Melamchi Khola and Indrawati Khola to reach the Melamchi Bazaar with several lodges and shops. Stay overnight here.

Day 09: Malemchi Bazaar to Kathmandu (1350 m) – 4/5 hours
Take a bus to Kathmandu that is 73 km far passing through the Lamidanda and Dhulikhel. The road is bumpy until Lamidanda then joins the Kodari Highway with a paved road. Enjoy the beautiful highway town with the Himalayan views from the Dhulikhel. Stay overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 10: Departure to Tribhuban International Airport
Airport is 6 km far, which takes 25 minutes car drive. Get airport 3 hours before your flight. Hope you enjoyed trekking trip in Nepal and welcome back again with a new program. We wish you safe and happy flight.
