How to get Bhutan
By Air – Druk Air is the national airlines. Paro is an international airport above 7300 ft. Druk Air flights to Kathmandu, Bangkok, Singapore, Dhaka, Kolkata, Delhi, Bagdogra, Bombay, and Guwahati.
By Land – Phuentsholing is a town lies in eastern Bhutan that is 170 km east of Bagdogra Airport (India). Phuentsholing to Thimpu (the capital city of Bhutan) is a 176 km distance that takes 6 hours by bus. Gelephu lies in South-Central Bhutan. Thimpu is 250 km far; the bus takes 10 hours to reach Thimpu. Samdrup Jongkhar lies in Eastern Bhutan that is 150 km far from Guwahati (India), a bus takes 3 hours to reach there. Samdrup Jongkhar to Thimpu is 700 km far, which takes 3 days to reach there. Tourist can visit Trashigang, Mongar, Bumthang, Trongsa, Wangde, and Phodrang before Thimpu.
Tourist Visa
Except for Maldivian, Indian and Bangladeshis nationals, all tourists require a visa to visit Bhutan that is issued from Thimpu. Locally licensed tour operators and foreign travel agents have issued a tourist visa. It takes 10 days for visa clearance. Air ticket to Bhutan can be purchased after the visa clearance. Two passport size photos with money are required for a visa for a 15-day and extensions can be obtained in Thimpu.
The daily cost of Travel
The Royal Government of Bhutan has fixed the cost of packages to Bhutan, which should be paid in US Dollar before travel.
Daily cost
The minimum cost for a tourist in a group of three persons and more. March, April, May, September, October, and November are the high season that cost USD $ 300 per person per night. January, February, June, July, August, and December are the low seasons that cost 250 USD $ per person per night. If you are single and two people in a group an additional cost is charged.
The minimum cost includes
Accommodation, all meals, license holder tour guide, all internal transport, all internal taxes and charges, camping equipment are included for trekking and tour.
Note: These above costs are applicable per tourist per night. On the day of departure, the local agent provides only breakfast if any extra requirements shall be payable on an actual basis.
Discounts
> Since 2009, the government shall be given the 25% discount on diplomatic visas
> Below the age of 25 years, full-time students with a valid identity card of the academy shall be given a 25% discount on daily rates.
> Five years old children have no charge and 6 to 12 years old, accompanied by guardians /elders shall be given a 50% discount on daily rates and 100% discount on royalty.
> If there are 11 to 15, people in a group shall be given 50% discount on the daily cost for 1 person and if 16 people in a group shall be given 100% discount to 1 person.
> 50% discount on Royalty shall be provided after the eight-night and 100% discount on the 14th night.
Delayed arrivals
There is no charge for delays arrival and departure due to the weather; however, a tourist should pay themselves extra food, accommodation, and transportation.
Medical/Travel Insurance
Royal Insurance Corporation of Bhutan has initiated a travel/medical plan solely for tourist, it is important to get detailed information from the travel agents in Bhutan.
Money/Bank
Ngultrum (Nu) is similar to an Indian Rupee. Travellers’ cheque, cash, American Express or US Dollar and ATM facilities are available in major towns, including Thimpu. Bank of Bhutan Ltd, The Bhutan National Bank, Tashi Bank, and Druk PNB with ATM service are available.
Electricity
All major towns have electricity with 220/240 volts with round holes two and three-pin power outlets.
Photography
Photographs of mountains, landscapes, plants, architectures, and Chortens are possible; however indoor photographs of Shrines, Dzongs, and religious institutions are restricted unless special permission from the Department of Culture. Ask a tour guide before a photograph.
Communications
Telephone and internet café is available in every town and every hotel in Thimpu and Paro. The mobile phone is also used with international roaming facility.
Personal Equipment
Summers temperature remains 20° to 25° Celsius and winter temperature remains below 15° Celsius on average. Bring warm clothes, windproof jacket, sunglasses, sun cream, insect repellent, personal medicines, flashlight, camera, films and umbrella for the rainy season and Diamox for high altitude sickness.
Shopping
Handwoven textiles, wooden masks, baskets of cane, handmade paper, and Thanka painting are available to buy in major towns and Thimpu. Antique goods are forbidden to buy in Bhutan.
Customs
The following articles are exempt from duty.
You need to complete the passenger declaration form on arrival before checking out and the articles 4 and 5 numbers must be declared on the form. If any such items are disposed of in Bhutan by sale or gift, they are liable for customs duty. On departure, visitors are required to surrender their forms to the customs authorities.
Note: Arms, ammunition and explosives, all narcotics and drugs except medically prescribed drugs and wildlife products of endangered species and antiques are restrictions to import and export.
Language/Time
Dzongkha is the national language. English is spoken in the tourism sector. Bhutanese time is 6 hours ahead of the GMT. The office hours in summer (March to October) are 9 AM to 5 PM and the offices hours in winter (November to February) are 9 AM to 4 PM. The working hours at private firms and other corporations are usually 9 AM to 5 PM.
Health and precautions
Before a visit to Bhutan, it is advisable to have tetanus, typhoid, and hepatitis A inoculation. Drink sealed bottled water. Avoid walking alone in the streets after 9 PM but in a group with a guide is Okay.
