Lower Dolpo Trek

Lower Dolpo Trek is 13 days mountain trip to the northwest Himalayan region of Nepal that starts at Juphal Airport with a scenic flight from Nepalgunj. The isolated remote landscapes and local Buddhism lifestyles are similar to Tibet, China. The hiking meets local interaction, culture, polyandry marriage system, air burial, and caravan trade. 

Lower Dolpo Trek offers 5-7 hours daily hikes with the high Numa La (5190 m) and Baga La (5070 m) passes. The Oscar-awarded film was shot with actor Mr Thinly in Dolpa. Local people have unique lifestyles, dialogue, typical dress, food habits, and ornament. Shey Phokshundo National Park is rich in various wildlife and plants. 

Lower Dolpo Trek reaches Bonpo Monastery in Dho-Tarap village. Monks practised cave meditation (3 to 25 years) to be Lama. The medicinal, Yarsagumba (cordyceps) grows in the region. Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu Airport
Our guide meet you at Tribhuvan International Airport, transfer hotel in 25 minutes. Check-in hotel and guide will brief the programs. Stay overnight at the hotel with breakfast in Kathmandu.

Day 02: Full day sight seeing in Kathmandu Valley
Our professional Tour Guide meets at 9 AM with a car to the hotel. The guide explains about Nepal while driving. Of the four UNESCO world heritage sites, Swayambhunath (1st century) is the Buddhist Stupa famous for the activity of the Assamese monkey, the panoramic view of Kathmandu Valley with the Himalayas. Kathmandu Durbar Square (8th to 18th century) is interesting for royal palace squares, museums, Kasthamandap, the Living Goddess Kumari, Freak Street, wood carving and temple architecture. Pashupatinath (5th century) is famous for the cremation ghat, Pashupatinath Temple, the shrines with Shiva Lingam and Yoni, the Hindu holy men (Sadhus), an activity of the Assamese monkey, deer in the sub-tropical forest. Boudhanath (5th century) is the largest Stupa in Nepal with a Tibetan refugee settlement, painting school, huge prayer wheel, prayer flag, monastery, monk and lama.

Day 03: Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (165 m) - 50 minute by flight
Fly to Nepalgunj in 50 minutes with views of the village, city, forest, and mountain. Drive a 6 km jeep to the city. Stay overnight at the hotel with breakfast in Nepalgunj. The bus from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj takes 16 hours with its 522 km (324 miles) distance. It lies in the southwestern part of Nepal. The bus stand is 1 km north of the Birendra Chowk. The bus leaves different parts of Nepal. Nepalgunj is 6 km north of the Indian border, 17 km away from the Nanpara Rail Station. The mixed community lives there, such as Magar, Thakuri, Gurung, Newar, Bahun, Tharu, Chhetri, Tibetan, Sadhus, and Muslim. There are hotels, shops, colleges, schools, Bageshwori Temple, electricity, and hospitals. The flight from Nepalgunj goes to Dolpo, Bajura, Safebagar, Rukum, Surkhet, Jumla, Surkhet, Simikot and Kathmandu. The summer temperature grows up to 42° Celsius.

Day 04: Nepalgunj to Juphal (2320 m) and hike to Dunai (2110 m) - 2/3 hours
We drive 6 km to the airport. An early morning flight to Juphal takes 35 minutes with the views of snow-capped mountains, forests, villages and river valleys. We start our hiking through the winding valley. We descend through meadows to Kala Gaura (2090 m) with a lodge. We walk along the river valley to Dunai. Stay overnight at a camp in Dunai.

Day 05: Dunai to Tarakot (2540 m) - 5/6 hours
We take a hot breakfast, hiking goes along the south bank of the Bheri River. We cross the suspension bridge, village, deep gorge, pine trees, and terraced field to Tarakot. Here is Dzong (fort). Stay overnight at a camp in Tarakot.

Day 06: Tarakot to Laini (3160 m) - 6/7 hours
The hiking goes continues crossing the bridge a couple of times over the Tarap Chu River. We meet the Sandul Gompa at the confluence of the Tarap Chu River and Barbung Khola. We walk through the village, terraced fields, uphill, downhill trails to Laini. Stay overnight at a camp in Laini.

Day 07: Laini to Nawarpani (3540 m) - 5/6 hours
We hike in the Tarap River gorge. We descend Chyugur Khola and cross a bridge hike to Nawarpani. Stay overnight at a camp in Nawarpani.

Day 08: Nawarpani to Dho Tarap Village (4090 m) - 6/7 hours
We hike gradually uphill to Kamattaka with a confluence of the Lang Khola and Tarap Chu Khola. The trail goes narrow gorge to the juniper bush in the Himalayas Valley. We walk continue to Dho Tarap. The Magar and Tibetan people live with the practice of the Bonpo religion. Stay overnight at a camp in Dho Tarap Village.

Day 09: Dho Tarap to Numa La base camp (4435 m) - 6/7 hours
We hike through the pleasant valley toward the upper Tarap with the Tarap Chu Khola. We reach Tokyu Village with the Chaiba community monastery. We visit there and continue our hiking on a rough trail to the Numa La base camp. Stay overnight at a camp in the Numa La base camp.

Day 10: Numa La base camp to Pelung Tang (4465 m) - 6/7 hours
We hike steeply uphill toward the Numa La Pass (5190 m). We enjoy the superb view of the barren mountains with the Dhaulagiri (8167 m). We descend to Pelung Tang. Stay overnight at a camp in Pelung Tang.

Day 11: Pelung Tang to Dajok Tang (4080 m) - 5/6 hours
We continue uphill hiking toward the Baga La Pass (5070 m) with a great view of the Kanjirowa Himalaya range and its surrounding landscape. We descend Dajok Tang. Stay overnight at a camp in Dajok Tang.

Day 12: Dajok Tang to Ringmo Village (3600 m) - 4/5 hours
We take a hot breakfast, and hike through a forest of pine, the yak pasture, and alpine shrubs toward the Ringmo Village. We arrive at Phoksundo Lake and the ancient Monastery. Stay overnight at a camp in Ringmo Village.

Day 13: Ringmo Village to Shyanta (2520 m) - 5/6 hours
We take breakfast and descend to Chepka. We climb uphill to the villages. We hike to Shyanta. Stay overnight at a camp in Shyanta.

Day 14: Shyanta to Juphal (2320 m) - 5/6 hours
We hike gradually uphill path to the Sunlight. We walk through a forest of birch with views of mountains and Juphal. The hike continues to reach Juphal. Confirm your Juphal-Nepalgunj flight ticket for tomorrow morning. Stay overnight at a camp in Juphal.

Day 15: Juphal to Nepalgunj (165 m) and Kathmandu by flight .
Take breakfast in the morning. Fly to Nepalgunj in 35 minutes with the views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, village, forest and river. Try the next flight from Nepalgunj to Kathmandu for 50 minutes. Stay overnight at the hotel with breakfast in Kathmandu.

Day 16: Departure to Tribhuvan International Airport
It takes 25 minutes to drive (6 km road). Kathmandu airport requires 3 hours to arrive before the flight departure. We wish you a safe and happy flight.
