History

Hindu and Buddhist legends were behind the origin of Kathmandu Valley. Once the valley was a pristine lake, Sage Manjushri came from China to worship Swayambhu. He struck a deep cleft of the Chovar hill with his divine scimitar and drained off the water, making the valley inhabitable for human settlement. On the other hand, Lord Krishna of the Mahabharata age came to the valley and sliced the Chovar hill with his divine discus Sudarshan Chakra, flowed out the water, and prepared the valley for human settlement. The cowherds Gopal Dynasty was the first inhabitant (15th century BC) of Kathmandu Valley. Afterwards, buffalo herds, Kirat, Lichhavi, Malla, and Shah dynasties ruled in the valley until 2008 AD. The Bagmati civilisation is ancient. The excavation of Maligaon in Kathmandu in 1992 found the statue of King Jaya Verma with an inscription dated 185 AD.
